ORIS is still an independent watch company, which means something in Switzerland. The Quartz crisis in the late 70ies had led to a mega merger in the early 80ies. The Swatch Group had collected most of "Swiss Watch Land" under one big umbrella.
ORIS had often produced nice watches using older ASSA (A. Schild Societe Anonyme) or AS movements, like the AS 50xx alarm caliber. ORIS star began to rise when a marketing genius coined "HIGH MECH". Since then ORIS' marketing became stronger and stronger and ORIS has definitely made a move upward. I was surprised to see that the brand was stronger in Asia (I had arrived in Asia in the mid 90ies) then in the "heimat" Switzerland. With the introduction of the "BIG CROWN" models and following the general "BIG WATCH" trend, ORIS has established itself as a renowned Swiss brand offering high quality at still affordable prices.
