Orient, Japan

Orient was long one of the Japanese big three: SEIKO, CITIZEN, ORIENT until Casio pushed into watch market after having successfully introduced a very inexpensive handheld electronic pocket calculator. In 2001, Seiko's EPSON subsidiary bought 30% of Orient' stock. So Orient is today partly owned by SEIKO. There is a lot of talk whether that partial take over would affect Orient's corporate direction. In the past, Orient had often raced creating great inhouse movements against SEIKO and CITIZEN. And often, all in-house movements of those companies had great similarities. Orient today seems to have shifted into a slightly higher tier of watches in Japan, whereas internationally they continue to promote their less expensive lines. Orient watches are also very popular in Russia and Orient has a large factory in Brasil where they are also very popular. One thing is sure, Orient has always been known as providing excellent value for the money at a sometimes unmatched quality level in the given price league.

Note regarding Orient Calibers from Dan aka Zeb
Dan aka Zeb (a fellow PMWFer) is investigating Orient's Caliber Numbering and has found some interesting facts so far. Good to know is that the movement notation changed in 1995.
The different movements, indicated by two letters in the model number, have different degrees of accuracy. This info is from a 2001 catalog.
FC, EG : +10~-5 sec / day
FA, EX, FE, ER, EM : +25~-15 sec / day
PF, NR : +40~-30 sec / day

 Adriano from SCWF made a great post with Orient movement information. Some excerpts of Adriano's findings are: most of the Orient watches obviously use the Caliber 46943 or a variation of it which is based on the SEIKO Caliber 70xx (7005, 7009 etc). The movement was designed in the 70ies. Today the quality of the movements is still the same, but the movements are not as nicely finished as they were in the 70ies. Orient Stars and Royal Orients use different movements. PMWC uses the inscription on the dial at 6 o'clock for all Orient Calibers which according to the information above, denominates the accuracy rather then the movement number.

Manual for Orient Caliber EVAA - but valid for most Orient models

Foreword regarding lack of manual winding
Most Orient watches come without a winding mechanism. Many Japanese watch companies decided to drop the manual winding mechanism for their AUTOMATIC watches. Since the magic lever winding system (developed by SEIKO but also used by ORIENT) is such an efficient automatic winding system, swaying the watch for ca. 30 seconds will give it enough energy to start running for a couple of hours and then if you wear it, the power reserve will gradually build up.

"Winding"
The watch is non-winding, that means you best sway the watch in ca. 8 inch circles for about a minute, that will wind the watch sufficiently so it can be worn. During the wearing, the watch will gradually wind itself further, after wearing the watch for about 24 hours it should be fully wound. This of course depends on your level of physical activity during this time. Do not shake the watch or hammer it or shake it, mechanical watches do not like to be shaken or beaten. They are small mechanical wonders and albeit not overly fragile, should be treated as such.

For the setting of your watch best follow the sequence below:

Setting the Day (where available) and Date
1) Pull the crown out
2) Turn the crown to move the hands repetitively over midnight to select the correct Day of the Week (no quick set mode for the day)
3) Use the button at 2 o'clock to set the correct Date, if there is no button at 2 o'clock (and no quick set mode for the date), move the hands clockwise until the date window shows the correct date
4) Leave the crown out to proceed with "Setting the Time" (below) .
Due to the use of the quick set button for setting the date, there is no restriction as commonly found on automatic calendar watches regarding not to set the date during the hours near midnight.

Setting the Time
The watch is non-hacking. That means if you pull out the crown to the first position, the second hand will not stop. However by applying a slight backward pressure - remember, remember slight - the second hand will most likely slow down or stop or even start to run counter clockwise. This is the same trick often used also for the many Seiko models using the caliber 7S26 and the same method can be used to "hack" most non-hacking watches. I do however NOT RECOMMEND to hack non-hacking watches ROUTINELY. You can do it when you get the watch new to observe its accuracy, but I do not recommend to keep hacking non-hacking watches, you will one day bend the crown stem and then the watch needs to see the watchmaker. If you need a hacking watch, then please select a movement that features hacking seconds.
1) Pull the crown out
2) Turn the crown clock-wise to advance the time to the desired time
3) Since you have just set the correct Day of the week, you will know whether your watch is now displaying e.g. 8 AM or 8 PM. If you are setting the watch while being in PM hours, simply advance the hour hands for another 12 hours.
4) Push the crown back in and you are done.
