MIDO, Swiss Made
MIDO became famous with their very clever
water tank used to display their water proof watches. MIDO used a patented
system with a cork seal to achieve an astonishing water resistance. Also the
case is basically one piece, that means the watches are so called "front
loaders". During a service the watchmaker will lift out the crystal and access
the watch movement through the front. This construction guarantees for a great
water resistance.
At the same time "King of Water Proof Watches" was the slogan MIDO used to
advertise their watches.
In the 90ies MIDO obviously hired good design talent. Suddenly they great
looking models. Overhauled their classic designs of the Multiport and other
models. The new designers managed to bridge the gap in the 80ies where MIDO did
not do too well.

MIDO Commander White One of the first really water resistant watches from "The King of Water Proof Watches" as the MIDO slogan read in the 70ies. Fish tanks were put up in the shops to display these watches and to demonstrate their water resistance! Non-screwed crown with cork seal together with a one piece case make the 100 m Water Resistance rating possible. The watch is a so called front loader, you will remove the movement by removing the crystal. Original MIDO openers to do this yourself eventually, are often on sale on Ebay for very little money.
