About Citizen, a great Japanese watch brand

Always Nr. 2 behind SEIKO, Citizen is a very high quality and very innovative watch company. In my humble opinion, they have too often tried to beat SEIKO's Nr. 1 position then to focus on their own strengths. One has to visit Japan to see that dominance of SEIKO: e.g. in Tokyo, public SEIKO clocks are almost always in more dominant locations then CITIZEN clocks. But... just take this race to the United States and then Citizen wins hands down. The customer service of Citizen in the USA is simply great. Those good people even browse the SCWF (more comments about this below) for posts regarding problems with Citizen watches. And - unlike the customer service of SEIKO - the CITIZEN US customer service does serve the customer.

My experience with the customer service of SEIKO in the USA is that they do not read what you write them in your email and send you back a standard letter. Ignoring your problem. I had a problem with a caliber 8F56 that had the wrong perpetual calendar setting from the factory. It would always display the wrong date. I had to post this question on the web in order to get an answer from a friendly chap named "Bob" on the Japanese Watch forum! The SEIKO customer service wrote me back to read the manual. I had copied and attached pictures of the 8F56 manual in my first mail to them showing them that the manual does not show any setting instructions. Also to correct his, I have created a page with my own setting instructions for the SEIKO 8F56 caliber. Needless to add how disappointed I was to get such insulting responses from the SEIKO USA customer service. Maybe the gentlemen there should try to have a look at what the Nr. 2 is doing ;-) Time of writing April 2005, and I have some more cards in my sleeves, I have 3 defect SEIKOs bought in May 2003 in Bangkok. I am sure this will become a really hot and interesting battle to have these three watches replaced. Of course I have all the papers, high resolution pictures of the damages (deteriorations, blistering of dial paint and decomposition of Luminova, the SEIKO luminous paint) proving my point.

Citizen has come up with a lot of innovations as one of the very first company. Just to name a few: radio controlled triple band watches, they perfected the Eco-Drive watches integrating the solar cells almost invisibly into the dial. The Eco-Duo Drive, a combination of solar and mechanical movement is one of my favorites. In 2002 they introduced Eco-Drive Vitro, the solar cells are now integrated into the watch crystal and almost invisible!
I am a big Citizen fan. Partly also because the US customer service of Citizen is so great. Twice already I got immediate help from the US customer service department of Citizen after posting on the SEIKO CITIZEN WATCH FORUM (SCWF) which should actually be called CSWF (I hope the owners of the SCWF will allow me this little joke), because to me, Citizen is the top Japanese electronic watch brand today. Please note, this is my personal opinion. I am an electrical engineer, therefore I might be professionally biassed. If you look at the history of mechanical watches, then of course SEIKO has the greatest watchmaking achievements during the period from the end of WW II to the present. Of course as a Swiss I will also always mention, that there had been very intense legal battles between Swiss companies and the Japanese brands over patent infringements during the 60ies and 70ies. Partly because of those battles, Orient e.g. had to stop the development of their in-house calibers (source)

HELP! My Eco Drive does not start!
Please give all Eco-Drives a sufficient "daylight shower" to kick start them. Expose them to sun light but not too long. You do not want to "fry" your watch dial. Also placing an Eco-Drive near the back window of your car during a Summer day is not a good idea.
60 degrees Celsius or 140 degrees Fahrenheit is the Maximum! 50 cm or 20 inches is the Minimum Distance from the lamp!
Once you come back from the ballgame of your junior, you might find a watch that is so hot, that you can barely touch it! Also please read the manual! You will be surprised HOW MANY GOOD HINTS the good people at Citizen put into YOUR MANUAL! Newer calibers run easily for 6 months in the dark!

Reviving an older Citizen Eco Drive after a long period of inactivity (ca. 6 months)
Recently I gave all my Citizen Eco Drives (private collection) a sunbath. The first Titanium Alarm Chrono with Eco Drive, ca.1996, did not start after a long one hour sunbath. Solution: I put the watch into the refrigerator over night and gave it another 30 minute sun exposure. You will have to follow the instructions of the respective caliber in order to set the watch. Thus keep buying these Citizen Eco Drives with confidence!

If nothing is mentioned, all PMWC Citizen watches come with original Citizen box, international warranty stamped by authorized dealer, open date.
