PMWF FAQ, Icons and LOGO INDEX

Dear all

This page had been suggested by Rafael Ed. Calderon, a great idea that had helped to develop this forum to its current size and popularity immensely. Thank you for the suggestion Rafael! Today this page feature a lot more then simply the FAQ. There are a lot of PMWF Icons that can be automatically inserted into a board software that was written long before emoticons were fashionable. Jittery Jim had the idea of a pop-up window that would allow the user to click on an icon and then automatically insert it into either the subject line or the message body. Thanks JJ! Munch, who obviously has many talents (he is the designer of all the logos that you see on PMWF.com, he also designed PMWC and PMWSF) wrote the JavaScript code necessary to pick that icon from a pop-up window and then insert the icon trigger code into the open post form. Thank you munch, your contributions are still giving PMWF.com a great look!
Also there is a huge brand index with logos and linked to the manufacturer's website. It is a unique WATCH LOGO INDEX and the work of our dear Bas in The Netherlands. Thank you also Bas for your great contributions.

Best regards

Reto on behalf of the PMWF Admin Team

Icon Moratorium - How to get a new Icon these days?

We have now so many icons - many of them rarely used - that we decided to issue an "icon moratorium". HOW does this work?
1. Make a poll on the forum suggesting a new icon and
2. Suggest an old icon to be replaced

This will also allow us to keep our icon triggers in the forum control file within certain limits. Thank you.
PS The Moratorium does not apply to Watch Brand Icons.

1. FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. How do I post a Picture? - Probably the single most asked questions for newbies and people new to watch forums. I tried to compile a graphical manual with minimal text, so you just look at the pictures and you can do it, without reading a lot of text and manuals.

Please read the How To Post a Picture guide for an explanation on how to use an image host.

2. How do I change or delete my own post?WebBBS - the forum software used on PMWF - does not allow the user to modify or delete posts in the standard setup. Please use the Preview feature to carefully review your message before posting. You can always post a corrigenda as a reply underneath your main thread or reply.

3. Where do I sell my watches or look for watches to buy? After a user survey I decided not to install a PMWF Sales Corner. Most users found that it would be more important to preserve the good atmosphere of PMWF rather then adding yet another Sales Corner. Until then use the Sales Corner on Time Zone, Seiko & Citizen Trade Corner, WUS etc. ... there are plenty of sales corners established and introduced where you could sell your watches. If you need information on where to buy a specific watch, then just ask a question on the forum. Please do not post sales posts on PMWF, thank you.

4. Are posts being DELETED on PMWF? No! I believe that PMWF can do without deletion of posts. The community should stand up against trolls and shills and the Admin Team will use a "hands off" moderation style. We believe that letting posts stand as is, is far better then deleting them and we expect the forum visitors to defend and speak up if other members of the forums are attacked.

Exception: our Admin Team will of course delete one of your posts if you ask us to do so.Also if you feel attacked and not well enough defended by the forum's other visitors, you can ask us per email to take action. But in general we would really prefer to remain with our "hands off" moderation style. Look at us as "party hosts" rather than "forum cops"

5. If posts are not DELETED, why can I not find my post? Because the forum's active pages contain only posts from the last 3 days in order to save some bandwidth. Every time you reload the forum, the whole message index is reloaded. Thus a shorter message index will lead to less bandwidth consumption. This is a pure technical/economical reason. But all posts are in the forum's database, you can use the search function to find all posts since PMWF has opened. Specify a date range and then use this date range to search or provide keywords for your search.

6. I am new to watch collecting! How do I get the fastest overview of what is out there regarding watches? Read Jeremy O'Kelly's great Collectors Guide! Jeremy gives you a comprehensive yet compact overview about all aspects of collecting!

2. PMWF and Watch Forums Glossary

Foreword: This is in no way intended to be a comprehensive watch forum glossary. For many web related acronyms, please see the Internet Acronyms Dictionary. There are many out there, this is the one I normally used. As a newbie on watch forums (that is the time before June 2001) I also had to look up terms like ROTFLMAO (rolling on the floor laughing my ass off) and IMO(in my opinion) or IMVHO (in my very humble opinion). But you will be surprised how fast you will get used to those acronyms.

2.1 PMWF specific acronyms and slang:

Please note that like in any social system, the forum's community is permanently creating new PMWF Lingo, so updating this list has proved to be an impossible task. Be on the forum to see what the "slang" is :) Also you should not feel any pressure having to use any of the PMWF Lingo. But since some of the terms are really funny and smart, we kept this rather old (2001, 2002) glossary here for your entertainment.

BM: Black Monster, referring to Seiko SKX779K

BW: Beggar's Watch (by chensk) a watch costing around USD 50

DWD: Definitive WIS Delirium by Rafael E. Calderon, created after he found himself heat sealing small plastic bags for spare links. Definition of DWD:a point in time where a WIS does something, or accomplishes something, or resorts to something, that only another WIS can understand--although not necessarily appreciate

"Fred": late Fred Heineken, PMWF slang for Heineken Beer (by Greg Heath)

MC or Monster Club: owners of either a BM or PM, a Seiko SKX779K or SKX781K

OWN: One-Watch-Nirvana, belief of some people that one could be happy with one watch :-)

OM: Orange Monster, referring to Seiko SKX781K

PMW: "Poor Man's" Watch, note the quotations marks :-) If we are so privileged to own more than one watch, we are not poor men. I used this term because I found it described a place to discuss inexpensive watches best. Some argue it has something elitist or arrogant to it. I carefully checked the web before I chose the name and found about hits with Google. Thus

RMW: "Rich Man's" Watch, again note the quotation marks. Not all owners of RMWs are also RM :-)

SCSW: Starving College Student Watch, a term created by Evan, he would rather eat for USD 3 at the Greek's and buy another watch, then spending the money in luxury restaurant. I do the same by the way :-)

"SIS": Strap Idiot Savant, created on November 26th 2002 by Luca Rosetti

VPMW: Very "Poor Man's"Watch below USD 200, created by Jim Morell

WIS: Watch Idiot Savant, an idiot savant is a person that is exceptionally knowledgable much about a specific topic, watches in this case

WISSFE, WIS Sympathy FactorExploitation, exploiting a situation to get a watch, e.g. Jeff T. (thanks for inspiring this term) is thinking about exploiting his upcoming "knee surgery" to get a new watch. Now that is WIS determination and clever!

"Whim of the Day": term created by Mary, the wife of Charles McCoy (Charles was the first visitor on PMWF and could be also described as a founding father of PMWF, since I could double check all my ideas with Charles and he would give me very good feedback). The "Whim of the Day" term is used to describe our ever changing WIS moods of what watch to wear or to buy on any given day.

2.2 Icons that you can turn on in PMWF posts

How do Icons work on PMWF?

PMWF uses the bulleting board software WebBBS written by Darren Burgdorf. Example: if you type :) or :-)in the Subject line or Message Text of a new thread or response, the software's parser will replace your :) or :-)with a picture, a smiley in this case. There are many icons available on PMWF, forumners have been very busy suggesting them or even creating them.

If you don't like these icons to show up, you can use your ad-blocking or firewall software to block them. just add the directories listed below to the software's black lists:

New! Automatic Icon Code Insertion!

There is a new pop-up Icon Quick Reference active now on PMWF. Clicking on the cursive Icons link on the PMWF Main Page header or on the Icons link on the header inside viewing or posting screens, will open the window below.

Note: If you are on Cable/Broadband/ADSL and hopefully sitting behind a personal Firewall (e.g. ZoneAlarm) then you will have to enable Java Scripting in order to allow the Java Script based automatic Icon Code Insertion. Also if you Disabled Java Scripting in your browsers Advanced security settings, the automatic icon insertion will not work either.

PMWF Icon Quick Reference pop-up window - Note: not all icon are shown in the pop-up.
If you want to see all PMWF Icons click here please

How does the automatic Icon Code Insertion work?

^ Back to Table of Content

Manual Icon Insertion - the  fast alternative for frequent PMWFers  and required for icons not in the pop-up

Besides using the pop-up window above, you can also enter the icon code directly into the subject line or message body. If you are often on PMWC, you will be soon familiar with the code and enterting the Icon code might be faster then clicking on the pop-up Icon Quick Reference.
All those icons work in either the Subject or Message Text. Our forum software WebBBS (BBS stands for Bulletin Board Software) simply scans your input and once it detects the triggering Icon Code it displays the corresponding icon or animated GIF.
