Pike's Peak is a crazy circuit - 2 days ago
My wife and I drove it a couple of years ago in her Jeep. It is narrow and winding, dirt for at least half of the way as I remember. Tourists can't drive very fast on the road because of the traffic, most of it very slow. Coming back down we had to follow a very slow construction vehicle down and ride our brakes the whole way. The construction vehicle had many opportunities to pull over and lby Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum I still have 4 - 2 days ago
I sold my Monsters when I bought a pair of Sumos. I was wearing the Black Sumo this past week. And the orange Sumo: And this modified SKX007: And my other modified SKX007:by Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum I've got it here- a 47mm Steinhart - 17 days ago
I first bought an M&P 2801. I liked it but it was too small for me. I sold it and bought a 42mm Archimede with an ETA 2824: I liked the size and styling of the Archimede, but it was a little bit light. I bought a Poljot hand-wind. I liked the Poljot. It was a bit heavier than the Archimede and I decided that I liked the hand-wind movement. I also liked the brushed finish betterby Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum Welcome Jeremy - 23 days ago

QuoteJYdoesn't actually need to tell the time - any mobile phone can do that perfectly well I think a wristwatch is very efficient at its job, better than a cellphone. At one point in time we used pocket watches. A pocket watch has the advantage that it is not in your way during the day and it is protected from harm. But we moved watches from the safety of a pocket to the danger of our wriby Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum One of the most awesome watches ever! - 6 weeks ago
I liked them from the time I saw them, and I finally bought one. I really liked it, and its original bracelet is very comfortable. I finally sold mine because it was ultimately a bit too small for me. I miss it when I see photos posted here. It is one of the very few dress watches that I've liked.by Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum awesome Titoni! - 7 weeks ago
I look for lots of clues when I'm trying to buy something. Having a photo of the watch that can be connected to the seller is reassuring. I had a Titoni like that and sold it. It was a great watch, one of the few dress watches that I really liked, but it was a bit small for me. She was watching a movie and took a screen capture with her phone of a wristwatch. She sent me the picture and asked me what it was. After a lot of internet searching I found that it was a Breitling Top Time in the movie Thunderball. I would not have recognized the watch myself, to me it looked more like an old Seiko or an Omega Dynamic. Set it to take an image every 30 seconds or something like that and watch the watch run at high speed.by Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum I like the idea of the chrono complication - 2 months ago
It seems to me that a chrono is potentially the most useful complication. I first got a digital chrono about 30 years ago and I thought it was really neat, at least the novelty of it was neat. I wanted to time everything. I still think a chrono is useful for lots of things, especially runners, cyclists, etc., even for use in the kitchen. I bought a quartz analog Seiko chrono and it didn't worby Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum They did change gaskets and pressure test - 3 months ago
And they charge extra for the pressure test! I bought the watch used, I think it is around 5 years old now, but I had trouble with the battery a year or more ago.by Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum they advertise a very long power reserve for those models - 3 months ago
What good is a long power reserve if it can't be in the dark for even a small part of that time? Well now that I know how the watch really works, I know how to treat it.by Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum Happy day- my eco-drive air diver returned home - 3 months ago
I sent it to Citizen factory repair in California for a new power cell. That place doesn't get in any hurry. Today I received the watch back, three weeks and $88 later. It was charged somewhat (running) and was set to my local time and date! I'm glad to have it back and I will find it a new place to set where it can get a reasonable amount of light during the day. I've owned a couple of monsters and those bracelets were comfortable to me when adjusted properly. I replaced my monsters with sumos and those bracelets are more like oysters but also comfortable if adjusted properly. Unfortunately I can't get my sumos adjusted quite where I want them but I like the watches so much that I keep them. Here are a couple of oyster examples. I came upon this site while doing some internet searching. They seem to offer aftermarket watch parts and labor for customizing. I don't know anything more about them.by Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum I think this is extremely common with watches - 3 months ago
The MSRP of most watches is a lot higher than what is in the watch. I think most watch buyers get "taken" similar to this. They see an item in the store, they see the price, they want it, they buy it. They don't consider that it might be a lot cheaper if bought elsewhere. I bought a quarz Casio for $15 and when replacing its battery I found that it uses a Japanese Miyota movement. Before bby Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum who sells Steinhart watches? - 3 months ago
Steinhart sells direct, and I've found Gnomon who sell from Singapore. I was wondering if there are any US outlets that sell them. Otherwise is it reliable to order from Gnomon or from Steinhart direct and have the watch shipped to the US? I'm interested in an Ocean GMT. I sold an Omega so I might have some spare cash to buy one of these. I did some online research and found a few companies that claim to specialize in eco-drive repairs, but they seemed to be expensive. I recently sent mine back to Citizen in California for repair. I'll post how much it cost when I get it back.by Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum this pocket watch was my mother's - 3 months ago

I've owned 3 and after awhile I learned that they require fairly constant light. IOW don't lock it away in your closet or hide it in a drawer, keep it somewhere that it can get light during the day. When I got my first one I had read that they had a power reserve months long so I didn't think it was a problem leaving it in the dark from weekend to weekend, but then it lost its power reserve eby Bill J. - Poor Man's Watch Forum this weekend I'm wearing my Luminox weekend/beater watch - 3 months ago

My weekly wear watches are mostly automatics, with a few handwinds in there too. But I have a couple of quartz watches that I wear for weekends, as beaers, etc. I have a lot of weekend activities that aren't suitable for my better mechanical watches so I don't wear them and I sometimes have trouble keeping an auto running, so I like to have a quartz watch laying there running just in case. I still have my prized eco drive that has died. I tracked down some companies that do repairs but many of these companies want very high prices to replace the batteries. I found that Citizen has a repair company in my area and they recommend taking the watch to your local repair place vs. mailing the watch in, so I drove over they today with my watch. I've seen Rolex styling on very many brands. In addition to those three I've also owned a Debaufre Ocean. I didn't include its photo earlier because I only wore it on its bracelet.
