ZuanShi SM1A-K models were manufactured with many different dials, but the overwhelming majority of them were white. Some of the earlier models had silver-coloured dials, but few SM1A-K dials were any other colour. I’ve never seen one with a blue textured dial like this, so I bought it without hesitation.

102 is a low caseback number. Even numbers were used for models with stainless steel cases, odd numbers for chrome-plated cases.

ZuanShi bracelets aren’t easy to find.

Inside is the remarkable SM1A-K. It’s an earlier example, so there’s no date code.

Shanghai 7221 models aren’t particularly rare. Usually they have round dials, but this one doesn’t.

The bezel looks like it’s chrome-plated. The quick-set date works as expected, by turning the crown in the outermost of its three positions.

The date code under the balance, IH (August 1982), is the same as the one seen on the movement in my other 7221 801. It’s interesting that all four 7221 models in my collection have movements which, even though they date to three different years, were manufactured in the month of August.

Like my other 801, there isn’t a movement shield inside this watch. After examining all 27 of the Shanghai-made SS7/ZSH watches I own, it looks like the shield first appeared sometime in 1982. Every example from January 1983 and later has a shield except the one in my Baoshihua 7820. The only shield inside a watch from 1982 and earlier is in my 7110 (May 1982).
