Clocks were first produced in Tianjin in 1945 when a small formerly Japanese-owned factory was converted into Huawei Clock(making) Factory by a Shandong entrepreneur, Chen Yuwu. Many of its first workers came from the clock factory in Yantai, where Mr. Chen had been an apprentice. After some ups and downs and reorganisation, the factory became the Tianjin Clock & Watch Factory in 1959, when it merged with Tianjin Hengda Tobacco Factory in order to move to a larger facility.

I don’t know when Tianjin Clock & Watch Factory first produced wristwatches, but it is listed as one of the factories involved in the development of the tongji movement. Its early tongji models had the brand name Weixing (satellite). They seem to have lasted well over the years because Weixing watches are not difficult to find today. I picked up a couple at very little expense:

Some models have signed casebacks, but mine are plain. Their crowns are unsigned too.

Later, Tianjin Clock & Watch Factory produced some other brands, including Zhufeng, Yingchun and Milan.
