Budlet & Haiou: Two early Shanghai tongji movement watches

Some Taobao sellers specialise in watches with condition issues and sell them for low prices. While browsing one’s such seller’s listings I came across this Budlet in relatively good condition. At RMB 39 (about $6.25) it was one of the most expensive watches in the store.

Budlet was Shanghai Watch Factory’s export brand beginning in the mid-1970s. I like the pattern on the indices of this one. The batch number, 101, is the lowest number I’ve seen, and the watch could possibly come from the first batch of Budlets produced. I have another 7524 101 model, but the brand name is Sea Gull.

Under the balance is BA SS7 (January 1975) over 中国 上海 (China Shanghai). Curiously it was manufactured a month later than the movement in one of my 7524 201 Budlets.

Some other Taobao sellers specialise in uncommon watches and sell them for high prices. While browsing one such seller’s listings I came across this Haiou. At RMB 210 (about $34) it was one of the least expensive watches in the store.

These Shanghai Sea Gulls fascinate me. I used to think that they were made only with SS1 movements, except for the one English language model I linked above. A number of months ago, however, I saw one with a ZSE tongji from Shanghai No. 2 Watch Factory and a plain caseback. At first I dismissed the parts as replacements, but in the ensuing months I have seen enough additional examples to believe that these tongji Haious are authentic.

Then I saw this one with a signed caseback.

Interestingly the model number is not 7524 like the Sea Gull, but 7120H. I think the H indicates Haiou, just like the J in 7120J models indicates Jinji. The crown is unsigned. The SS7 movement, manufactured by Shanghai Watch Factory and not by Shanghai No. 2, is later than SWF tongjis marked with the Sea Gull and Budlet logos.

Under the balance is BL (December 1975) over 中国 上海 (China Shanghai), but the letters HO, presumably for Haiou, are stamped over the date code.
