I've found the only watches I can really pull off bigger than 40-42mm are Casios.

My 42mm Tourby Marine was too big (6-7/8" wrist at that time) even though it had down-turned lugs.

What I've found happens with the big watches is that if the lugs are about as wide as the top of my wrist, then the bracelet goes straight down, and it has to be uncomfortably tight in order for the watch head not to rotate around my wrist.
