Let's talk about (rebranded) stopwatches. The More You Know...

June 01, 2010 02:33PM
Hey gang,

A while ago, I picked up a cute little digital stopwatch online. It was cheap, and branded as Tag Heuer Microsplit 130. I couldn't find any more info about it, but it did appear to be a genuinely nice stopwatch... and matched other TH branded timers.

Well, two days ago... I found out the true origins behind this little timer. The modern Tag Heuer digital stopwatches are actually rebranded Hanharts!

Hanhart Sprint vs. Tag Heuer Microsplit 130.

The same thing is true about the current Microsplit 200:

Rebranding is not uncommon in the watch world... but I didn't really expect it in stopwatches. It does make sense. TH and Hanhart are both well known for making quality stopwatches. But since TH is all about wristwatches these days, they probably figured outsourcing the work to Hanhart would do the trick. It allowed them to keep the 'Microsplit' branding and image active, without any real investment.

I don't mind. In fact, it got me to purchase an original Hanhart stopwatch! I'm currently expecting delivery of a Hanhart Amigo Allsport mechanical stopwatch. Accuracy of 1/5th second with a 60 minute range. I don't need one in the slightest, but I love mechanical timing gadgetry nonetheless.

So, anyone else interested in stopwatches? Any good sources out there for more information?

Most are made then branded for golf or some sporting event>>>>>>>>

My suspicion is that BOTH outsource digital timer manufacturing

Never thought of that smile I think we can rule out TH as the manufacturer though.
