New Zarya, and a question... (3 replies)

Hi....
I just received this Zarya

(Seller's picture)
from the famous and reputable Vostok seller on eBay. (Not sure about rules re: seller's names)
I like it all out of proportion to it's cost. (About $45.00) The vintage military look appeals to me, and it's small enough at 38mm not to get in the way when I'm working.

I'd like to know if there's any info, a link or anything, about the movement.

One tiny problem: it's a hand-wind, which is fine, but the crown is tiny, and my fat fingers have difficulty getting ahold of it.
I'd like the crown to look more like this:

Does anybody have any info about what crowns might be compatible, and how to get one?

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Before I recently acquired my Strela, I had no idea about the prices of watches, and didn't realize that it probably fits in the "poor man's" category. :-) After looking at the prices of some of those Swiss brands, I've now got a better idea (or maybe it falls into the "sensible middle-class man's category").
Looking for a Dial for my Vostok Amphibia Tonneau (1 reply)

Hello everybody! I'm Enzo, a new member of the forum, and I'm from Italy. Please forgive me if I'm introducing myself in this post, but I've registered here because I need your help for my newest acquisition: a Vostok Amphibia Tonneau Antimagnetic 200m. As you can see, the dial is quite battered and scratched, so I'm looking for a spare dial for my watch. Let me know if you have a spare "Antimagnetic" dial (as long as it has the Antimagnetic text and it's coherent to the Tonneau case), so I can use it to restore my watch. I have already ordered a new pair of hands, to replace the Cadet ones, and a new crystal, because the current one has a lot of scratches. I'm also planning to repaint the bezel.

If you have a spare dial for my Vostok, please, send me a PM. I'd be very grateful for your help, thank you very much and happy new year!

-Enzo

P.S. Here is my Vostok.

I'm assuming that it is not original. Is it a Komandirskie with an Amphibia 'case-back', or is it an Amphibia with a Komandirskie dial? If it is an Amphibia with a non-original dial, I might get it just to get a fairly inexpensive Amphibia (it would be my first). These are the online photos I have.
My first two Soviet watches (6 replies)

I was considering my first Soviet watch several months ago, but after I was told here that what I was looking at was a re-dial, I backed off. I appreciate the shared expertise. I finally bought two Soviet watches recently. One of them is a 'ЗАКАЗ МО СССР'. Cosmetically it is not very impressive (the red date numbers have almost completely disappeared), but I am winding it everyday, and it seems to be keeping decent time. The other one is a brown-dialed 'dolfin', with a screw-down crown. Either I am a complete klutz when it comes to winding it properly (which is quite possible, even though I have 'read the online instructions'), or it may actually need to be serviced. When it runs, it seems to keep decent time, but it stops sometimes, which may be me not really 'getting it' when it comes to proper Vostok screw-down crown winding technique. In any event, I love the smaller size of the 'dolfin', the cursive Russian numeral style, and that crown stuck up there at the two-o'clock position.
I have a couple of questions. Considering that the 'ministry of defence' watch is not that pristine, would it be considered ethically 'okay' to try to get a replacement date wheel with more legible numbers, and if so, what might be a source of this part if I don't do e-bay?.
Is the 'dolfin' with the screw-down crown considered more water-resistant than a regular, slightly larger Komandirskie? Is it considered more of a scaled-down version of an Amphibia?
Finally, I have another vintage Komadirskie on the way. It is nothing rare; a 30-or-40 year commemorative ending-of-the-great-patriotic-war, but it has a surprisingly non-ugly black bezel. Since some of the chrome plating is starting to flake off, and since I think that brass (even tarnished) is much more attractive, and since it was cheap, I was thinking of having a watch person take the movement out, and the bezel off, and then removing all of the chrome plating. Has anyone else done this? Is there a best way to do it? Is this mod considered unconscionably crass by everyone here? Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Keeps good time but will run for only 23 hours. It's a wind up Komandirskie. Any suggestions on what's going on and is it an easy fix?

ЗАКАЗ ГКУ СССР any relation to ЗАКАЗ МО СССР? (7 replies)

Hi,
I'm new to this forum, but I have been reading some of your recommendations for budget watches recently. I have seen the inscription 'ЗАКАЗ ГКУ СССР' on a Soviet (I assume) watch dial recently, and wondered if it had any connection to the phrase, 'ЗАКАЗ МО СССР'. Is this a counterfeit of one of these collectible watches? I will probably buy a Soviet/Russian watch in the near future - either a Komandirskie or Amphibia, but I'm not very knowledgable about them. Thank you!

[Edit] Apparently it is a Molnija, not a Vostok, but it still says Komandirskie on the dial.
