Actually I wanted to do something special but ended up not being able to so I ended up doing a couple of small changes, first of all I installed a lumed dial from another model, the DLCed SNZG17 and then installed a red seconds hand from the SARB015, Seiko black Alpinist.

I think it came out all right and even if I don't care about the '5' logo and the "sports" writing on the dial I like the result. I think it changes it enough to make it a different watch from the original SNZG13 basic model.

Sorry for the poor photos and the dust specs, I hope you enjoy them at least a little nevertheless.

The strap is a Panatime black Galaxy that has a rubberized appearance that suits a diver well enough, although not so appropriate for diving.

There's some elements that bug me, like the lack of lume pip on the bezel, and the numbers and holes on the dial, but overall I like it. I will probably tweak it in the near future.

Seiko Black Pilot (15 replies)

About one month ago I spent the last few pennies of my watch funds to get the parts needed for this project. With parts coming from out of the US I ended up waiting a while but finally yesterday I got the last bit that I needed, coincidentally it was the watch itself.

Some time ago I had the idea of trying this combination, a Seiko SRP027/29 dial with a Seiko military watch. I did it before with a different dial but it was a different look. I really wanted this look because I like the 3-6-9-12 numbers on the dial. I ended up using the black military Seiko watch model SNZG17 which has a black DLC coating and as for the hands they are the same as the SARB59 minus the seconds hand, this is a regularl Seiko SKX hand that I shortened by cutting off the lumed dot on the tail.

The result is below, overall it is kind of nice I think even if now I remember why I did not keep any of these military watches I modded in the past... at 42mm the watch is a little small for my wrist and even more so being a pilot watch type which I would prefer it to be at least 44mm or more. Oh well, I guess I can always sell it and get something else...

Otherwise this is actually a nicely made watch, with the bracelet it has a solid feel and is one of the few watches that seem to be well proportionate in terms of lugs and body, at least to me.

Lume is great, bright and long lasting, all night in fact since it is Seiko, however the numbers on the dial are not lumed. Not a big deal to me really but I would have loved if the dial was lumed too. But it is all Seiko and all parts are original Seiko.

Anyway, since I like to share my projects, here are a few pics, sorry for the lint and dust specs, I don't have photo processing programs I can use to clean them up.

It's been a long time between drinks, but I've been dabbling in watch surgery... subjectsmiley32! (31 replies)

G'day all, it's been a while and I hope that you are all well!

So, a gazillion things have been going on in my life over the last few months, including coming to terms with severely limited watch funds thanks to a never-ending home extension and now a son at university interstate - if you want to figure out how to dispose of any excess $ try either of these things, let alone both!

So what's a WIS who's suffering from 'lack-o-lira' to do? Well, I decided that if I couldn't buy too many more watches I'd have a crack at making one:

I bought a generic old style Pam case that I really like, and mated it to a genuine Unitas 6498 with a dial that I made from a modified skeleton dial and an iPhone cover (the perforated background), and hands sourced on ebay

I also added a good quality 24mm tan strap with a PVD deployant

I did a lot of research over Christmas and bought a few tools, and I did all the assembly work myself including changing the cannon pinion for a taller one, setting the hands, applying the lume to the dial etc. It's not perfect, nor was it meant to be (I am a fan of the concept of Wabi Sabi), but it was a fun and educational project resulting in a unique watch that I 'made' myself.

The cost was surprisingly low (around $300) and I'm pretty happy with the results. Eventually I'll swap out the crystals for sapphire and then it will be completely finished.

I would recommend this sort of thing to anyone who is interested - I had never even removed a caseback until shortly before starting this project, so have a go and see what you can come up with!

Back to Basic, Seiko Bolt (16 replies)

I have been kind of busy in the past few weeks with not much time for forum activity. I finally completed this and wanted to share. After getting a couple of sophisticated watches that are powered by the light, one with a chronograph that can count down to 1/1000 of a second, I went back to basic with a regular mechanical watch with hour, minute, seconds, day and date basic functions.

I started this project a couple of months ago, I was looking at the watches for sale on the different forums just for fun as I do that some times, it seems to be an easy way to see lots of photos of different watches of different brands and models and some times they are inspiration for new projects for me. Anyway I was this rare watch on sale a Seiko SKXA33 which is a 200m WR divers watch different from the regular SKX line. It was used and had wear so it was being sold for an affordable price. I decided to get and that was the beginning. The watch arrived and it was nice enough even if it had quite a few wear marks. Unfortunately that model has an integrated bracelet and it was too small, checking with Seiko Customer Service only confirmed that it was discontinued and that they did not have any links available. So I made up my mind and shamelessly replaced the dial and hands with another set, sold the watch so modified to a happy buyer and off it went to a good home.

I looked and found a basic watch that I though would work and ordered it. However when it arrived a couple of weeks later I did not like the watch as much as I thought I would, so left it sitting for a few weeks. When I finally decided to put all the parts together and maybe just sell the watch, I did not like the final look. The hands did not work out however I really liked the dial on that case.

I started to look for something else and specifically I decided to get another set of hands and started looking again. A few weeks later I was able to get an original set of Seiko Sumo hands from Rob of Monsterwatches.eu (who is awesome by the way) and when I finally got them and installed them it was 2 months later.

During the installation I tried a few hands and then opted for the spare bolt styled hand that I had. The result? See for yourself. Sorry for the crappy photos, one of these days I will learn how to take them properly…

The case of this model which I believe is SRP213, has the 4r36 Seiko movement that hack and handwind. The case is made of stainless steel and it is about 42mm in diameter, 46 to the end of the crown. Lugs are 22mm. It has a Cyclops… my plan on that was to remove it since I did not care for it from the beginning, however the watch being brand new etc. made me rethink it and since I don’t really care one way or the other I just left it on for the time being. It does not really bother me at this point. The watch comes on a bracelet but for the moment I put it on a Zulu just so I could take the photos. While the dial is from a 200m WR watch, the basic watch is actually 100m WR so not quite a diver.

Lume is outstanding, the hands being from the Sumo are slightly brighter but that is usual, the dial is certainly well lumed like any respectable Seiko diver and it easily lasts all night.

The chrome framed indices and hands seem to complement each other well and the seconds hand gives the face an interesting look. I also like the large crown which is one of the things I am looking in watches, I mean I prefer a crown that is easy to grip and to use, and also I find I prefer the look of a watch that has a nice large one. The caseback is see through type, I would have preferred a solid one since the movement while not bad looking is nothing special but all considered I like the overall result.

Project #2, Frankie goes to Hollywood! subjectsmiley03! (no replies)

I really loved the SKZ249 Orange Franken-Tuna from the moment I bought it, but for some reason, the effect didn't transfer into wearing. I didn't get that proper subjectsmiley03! feeling about it. Always felt to be missing something. I decided since my first SNK project went so well, it was time to try tweaking the look I want into my Frankenmonster.

I have had a fascination with the cali-style dial faces, and I think they are intriguing. I decided to bite the bullet and buy one, along with a set of silver C3 Superluminova hands from Dagaz. The flat black of the dial seems to go perfect with the black plastic diver shroud, and the silver hands go with the polished screw down crown nicely. Now I feel great about this setup when wearing it.

I noticed in this case, I was able to get away with installing this dial without a chapter ring, and it fit securely in the pins and against the inside of the case. I like this effect, since it creates a larger, cleaner looking dial area to me.

I already had a nice rough leather panatime strap with the original Seiko buckle. Really enjoy this whole package as a weekend warrior.

Also happy about the C3 lume and the original dot in the bezel being prominent in the dark. easy to read, and the less lumed dial is still very visible, but the hands stick out more, which is great, because I use the bezel as a timer very often.

Overall, I didn't expect this dial to be enough for me, it is just a basic change. It felt strange pulling that monster lume dial out and packing it safely in storage, but it seems like a massive improvement from my own wearing feel.

So the real question now is.......... What do you call this watch? Franken Cali? Cali Monster? Frankie Goes To Hollywood? <-- Haha!

I don't know what it should be called, but I'm super happy with it for now. I'll be keeping the original orange dial and hands for the future.

The Pilot watch that Seiko did not build (22 replies)

I like Pilot watches and I have a few. Some however tend to be expensive, especially if they are Swiss or German made. I thought why wouldn’t Seiko make one that was good looking and of a proper size? They have a smaller one that is 38mm or so but while that is good for smaller wrists, I wanted something that was a little larger. At 42mm this is a pretty good size, not perfect by any means, but at least another option. It was made using all Seiko parts, the case is from a Military Seiko SNZG series, sandblasted case it appears, the dial is from the BFS SNKF011, the hour and minute hands are from a Seiko FFF and the seconds hand is from a Seiko 5. So Seiko has all the parts that they need to make it. They didn’t but I did.

I like it and therefore I thought to share. Here are a few photos to show the result, sorry for the lint and dust specs, but I hope you enjoy nevertheless.

Military pilot watch build (1 reply)

My latest build . My goal was to build a military look pilots watch that was hackable and had a large non screw down crown.. I started with a retro case from helenarou with sapphire crystals front and back. unfortunately it had a screw down onion crown that I did not like . I found a junk Invicta watch with an oversize crown (10mm) I had to remove the existing crown and tube and fabricate a new tube to fit the Invicta crown. I ordered a military dial from Otto Frei along with a 16mm second hand. The minute and hour hands came from a Seiko black monster and the ETA2836 movement came from a Croton watch. The project was finished off with a leather pilot strap with rivets.
Please excuse any dust or lint you may see in the pictures.

Seiko Blue Folgore (12 replies)

I started this project quite a while back. In fact I had the base watch for a couple of months. I had a basic mock up in my mind but when I got the parts I decided to get a different dial, this one. Then I saw the Yobokies Milgauss hands and I thought that I really wanted to use that one too… so many months later I finally had all the parts.

Unfortunately when I went to install the hands, the ones I wanted to use originally, they did not fit… so I had to fall back on the hands that came with the watch and I have to say I actually like the result.

The watch is a model from Seiko, SARZ005. The dial is from a long discontinued Seiko model the Blue BFS – SNKF05. The dial is dark metallic blue and actually very nice. The hour and minute hands are from the base watch while the second hand is from Yobokies. Folgore means Lightening in Italian so the name is after the shape of the seconds hand.

The watch is 41mm in diameter, it sports the 4R36 movement that hacks and handwind. I slapped on a Bond type strap for the moment but it comes with the bracelet too. The lume is nice and bright of course just like any Seiko. The amount of lume material is not a lot though so not quite as bright as a Seiko Diver but enough to tell the time all night long after charging.

Here are a few pictures I want to share, please excuse any dust spec or lint and I hope you enjoy.

Seiko FFF Sport (25 replies)

I had a couple of spare parts and decided to put together a quick project watch. I ordered a brand new watch and put together all the parts. I called it FFF Sport because of the red accents and because of the compact size similar to an Explorer. The case is about 38mm and the lugs are 20mm. The dial is from Dagaz and the hands are original Seiko from a FFF model while the seconds hand is from a Seiko Stargate.

Great lume of course and nice looking overall at least in my opinion, a little different from the usual FFF mods in that it does not have a rotating bezel and differnt from other Seiko 5 models for the nice and large crown. This is probably one of my favorite Seiko 5 cases for projects.

It is too small for my wrist so it will be offered to some other WIS in the near future and hopefully it will find a new nice loving home, but it is a nice looking little watch nevertheless. I put on it a brand new Zulu strap to complete the sporty look. I am still amazed by the different combinations one can put togehter using these Seiko automatic watches and the best part is that one can do it affordably.

Here are a few pictures including some lume shots. The original owner installed a Seiko 5 dial with Arabic numerals on the hour markers, and it had no chapter ring. The watch has had many different dials and handsets, but this one I just finished today. I had to modify a spare seiko chapter ring because the knight has a much shallower distance from dial to crystal, and the SBBN007 handset had to be modified as the hour hand hole was too small, and the minute hand hole was too large. The Sbbn second hand would not fit, There was no way I was even going to try to broach something that small, so I used a second hand from another seiko.

Seiko "Frecce Tricolori" (23 replies)

I have always been a fan of one watch built by Seiko for their pilots of the Japanese Ailrines. I don't know the model number but I have always known it as the Seiko ANA. This is a pilot type watch with the 7s movement, 39mm case with a coin edge bezel. It is a limited production item but it comes up once in a while on the Watch sales forums.

This has been affordably priced but still a little over my budget. At 39mm it is also a little small for my wrist, at least being a pilot type watch. So I decided to make my own, similar in overall design but denitely different and one of a kind. This could be a watch dedicated to The Frecce Tricolori, (Italian, literally Tricolour Arrows), officially known as the 313° Gruppo Addestramento Acrobatico, is the aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Aeronautica Militare based by my original home town.

For the base watch I chose the Seiko SARZ005 because it is about 42 mm and larger then most regular Seiko watches. It also has a nice large crown which was important to me in terms of the overall look and function. The movement is the new 4R36 24 jewels which handwinds and hacks, yes just like a regular ETA movement.

The dial is the one of the Seiko SNKF011 or BFS (Big Freaking Seiko) and as a matter of fact I had used a similar dial a few years ago in earlier attempt to make a pilot watch, but since then I had to sell it. The hour and minute hands are from a Seiko SRP043 (SPORK) Diver watch. The seconds hand is from a Seiko Stargate.

So all original Seiko parts. Lugs are 20mm. The watch originally comes with a solid links bracelet which tapers a bit, it is nothing special.

Personally I would have preferred 22mm lugs also because I don't have 20mm straps. What I ended up doing is use a Leather band that I had which is 22mm but has the ends shaved a bit to fit into 20mm lugs. This is a nice vintage tobacco leather from Debaufre with rivets. I am not particularly happy with it but it will do for the time being.

One nice thing is that I did not have to shake this to get it started, just wind the crown and it started ticking away...

Here are a few crappy photos including the usual dust specs...

Lume is of course excellent, bright and lasts all night, I know I tried it last night. Awesome Seiko lume. See photos to have an idea.

Here is a photo of the case back, it still has the clear plastic sticker on it so the photo is not the clearest but it does show the nice movement, a little better finished that regular run of the mill movements on other Seikos.

I hope you enjoy.

Completed my Speedmaster homage (2 replies)

I recently bought a Russian (?) Cjiaba from Guangdong, China, hoping it would be similar to the Alpha Speedmaster homage but it was covered with glitter, sparkles, and shimmering chrome reflections from the markers and emblem that would make any $12 fashion watch from Dollar General green with envy.
I paid $35 for the original new watch on ebay, added $18 for paint supplies, $8 for Dakota Watch Co. to open the watch and removing the movement for me,
and $4 gas driving around for these extras for a total of $65. Somewhat less than the Alpha version that was discontinued last year but I would have bought had it been for sale.
I painted with flat white acrylic with a "micro" paintbrush the 6 hands and 12 five-minute markers; not an easy task for a person my age whose nerves are mostly shot. I even blacked out the Cjiaba emblem which had a large dose of chrome.
Anyway, the first picture is the original that doesn't do the all the glitter justice. The markers sparkled excessively. The second hand was shiny metal as well as most of the hour and minute hands.
The 2nd pic shows what a little paint and two hours of tedious painting can do to bring it a lot closer to the look of a real Speedmaster.
I wish I knew of a painting technique to make this easier, but somehow the job was finished with good results.

Seeking feedback for prototype watch: EHF Pilot Mk.I (2 replies)

Hi All,

Quick introduction on myself. I am part of a group of watch enthusiasts and watch makers who have put together our first watch as a group.

Attached are some photos of our first production prototypes which we are coining the EHF Pilot Mk.I. Not for sale. Pretty much for family and friends to play around with, before we decide whether we want to take it to the next level.

One of the ideas we have been toying around with is a quartz version (which we have coined the EHF Pilot Mk.I Techno) for greater mass appeal and affordability. It would be powered by a Swiss quartz movement instead of the 6498. Stainless steel case (DLC coated) but with DLC coated steel back instead of sapphire. All else is the same. As for strap, will likley use the same Italian made white rubber strap or perhaps a lower grade Icelandic fish leather strap. If we do launch this, we may be looking at USD400 for Techno version (quartz), which we think is a steal for a DLC coated Swiss made watch.

Do let me know what you guys think! Appreciate any feedback on the design for both versions as well as for the pricing/ideas of the Techno version.

Thanks all,

Shawn

More pictures and details here: [www.ehf-horlogere.com]

---
EHF Pilot Mk.I Specs:
Case Material: Stainless steel with DLC coating, sapphire back
Crystal: Sapphire
Movement: Soprod 6498, Cotes de Geneve finishing, blue screws, individually straight grain bridge angle and black rhodium plating
Case size: 44mm
Case height: 10.33mm
Dial: SDG dial with enhanced Superluminova C3 markers
Strap: (TBC) display shows black leather strap, but thinking of of brown Icelandic fish leather (dressy look) or Italian made white rubber strap (sporty look)
Notes: 100% Swiss parts, assembled by Swiss watchmakers

Latest Divers project (16 replies)

I have two of these SRP043 Seiko divers watches and I really like them. However since I have two of them I tried to make one a little different from the other. Some time ago I installed some Mercedes hands on one and I kind of liked the looks, but in the end I was put off by the fact that the hands were a little too small/short in proportion to the watch. Not much really but enough to bother me. So I decided to handle that, I could not find any larger/longer Mercedes hands but I then settled for a different solution. The best look is the original one, and so I decided to try some similar but different hands. I got some original Seiko hour and minute hands from the "Fifty Five Fathoms" model and a seconds hand from a Seiko Alpinist.

The hands are similar in shape but they are chromed so they give a little different feel to the watch, the red seconds hand also contribute to that but since these are small changes, they only give a little different look keeping the original overall pilot feel. At least this is what I think.

Why bother with this, one may asks. Well, I really like this model and I think it is one of the best made Seiko watches actually, size, comfort, looks, proportions, etc. are ideal for me and I surely would not mind having more. But since the stem/crown position is slightly different then that on a usual Seiko divers like the SKX007 or Monster for example, any other dial won't fit unless one removes the feet. Then I also believe that because the movement is offset compared to the others, that the date window also might not align properly. I think this might be why one does not see many of these being modded with other aftermarket dials etc. As for me, when I can I prefer to use original Seiko parts like in this case and achieve a uniformity that is vital. See lume shots for example. And yes, the other SRP043 watch I have is completely stock.

Anyway, i just wanted to share some thoughts and photos, I hope you enjoy.
