Seiko Italian White Pilot Watch Project (3 replies)

This watch is dedicated to Francesco Baracca. For those of you who frown and scratch your head asking "who?" Francesco Baracca was a ace Italian pilot of airplanes in the first World War. Why him? Simply because it is the only one I know... I don't even know if he had a watch and I am sure that if he had one it did not look anything like this one, however I like to think he would have liked this...

The watch itself has been put together using the case of a Japan made Seiko SRP151, the dial replaced with the one of another Seiko model the SNKF09 and the hour and minute hands from a Seiko FFF model. The red seconds hand is the one using in the SARB15 or black Alpinist.

The case is 42mm wide without crown, the lugs are 20mm apart. The movement is the hackable and handwindable 4rxx. It has day and date complications. It is also pretty thin but feels substantial. It has a really nice lume, bright and long lasting which is expected since it is a Seiko.

This is of course the only one in existence and it is keeping company to the other similar projects. But on that more later...

Here are some pics, sorry for any dust specs or lint.

Don't forget, not many people here have A/C in the house, that is an exception, even not all modern offices do! We were talking about the generous offer Carlo did with the giveaway of his 18 mm flex bracelet and it reminded me of my vintage ALAM. It is actually a good day for such a watch, light and comfy! And this bracelet is on the way for it, from the seller, who boo-bood in describing the watch on eBay as good for 7,5" wrist, but in fact was 6".
A few recent projects (14 replies)

Here are a few of my recent projects. I have been very busy so did not have a chance to post these, but to make it short I have done these using some parts that I had spare or left over from other projects. These are all gone now but I thought to share at least the photos:

Bulova open heart. I got this on trade and replaced the hands with some sword hands. I actually liked this quite a bit, the Miyota movement also is pretty good looking. Decent lume too,

Seiko SKX173 project.
subjectsmiley63! Coming in October 2013, Stowa TESTAF >>> (8 replies)

TESTAF
The new standard for pilot watches in the watch industry.
Developed by FH Aachen.

With the project "technical standard of pilot watches" (in short "TESTAF") for the first time a precise technic-functional requirements catalog is submitted. This catalogue determines the regulations wrist-pilot watches with analogue time display have to fulfill nowadays in the civil air traffic in regard to sight - and instrument flight rules.
In the last years the term pilot watch became an arbitrary term.
Concrete functional and technical requests faded into the background. Therefore the FH Aachen developed and submitted in cooperation with the watch company Sinn this new standard.
Until now there was no clear definition for pilot watches,
(like for example for diving watches, DIN 8306/ISO 6425).
This gap will now be closed with the TESTAF certification.
STOWA wanted to test its 70 year experience in building pilot watches and decided immediately to participate in this certification procedure.
The new model FLIEGER TO1 TESTAF is currently tested at the FH Aachen and it is planned that the certification will be terminated by May/June 2013.
Of course you can look at this watch any time live or also in our online-shop.
You receive the complete information to the TESTAF certification under the following link: [www.testaf.fh-aachen.de]

Full story from Stowa website

Plenty of padding! ;-)

Click for Big Image.

Nestled within I found a bubble wrap bauble.

Click for Big Image.

Here is the bauble, with it's manual! Let me read up on how to open it. Ahh, I have it now...

Click for Big Image.

Oh drat, the lid is stuck!! :-D Why does this always happen to me! :-O Luckily I keep my unveiling crowbar handy now!

Click for Big Image.

There it is! This is the case, dial and hands from the black SKZ327, with the bezel and bracelet fron the white SKZ323. A perfect combination I think, especially with the SKZ327 case and it's black crown highlight! Great work Dave, and I am very glad you decided to sell it!!

Click for Big Image.

And here is how it looks in it's natural habitat, with a white cotton shirt. Nothing starchy and formal, but with some class!

Click for Big Image.

And of course, a Mr. Blinky shot to show off the really bright lume and easy to distinguish hands, distinctive 12 o'clock marker and bright bezel pip. :-D Woohoo!

Click for Big Image.

Okay, that was fun! Now I am tempted to collect all the Stargates, but that would be awfully expensive! :-(

I hope you enjoyed the show!

- Thomas

Victorinox Dive Master Chrono Black Ice Quartz. I saw it in a mall and asked them for the price: THB 41400 or USD 1354. That is USD 350 over the MSRP elsewhere.
In Thailand MSRPs are often higher then in Europe or the USA. The sales lady told me that 20% discount would be possible. A bit over USD 1000 or MSRP in Europe or USA. Still way too high.
I did not tell her that Amazon.com is selling them for below USD 500. And that means that these watches must be available for USD 300 something if you look really hard.

Now I have to wait again until this one is out of my mind.

First of all I had to pay the Mailman € 25,81/$ 34.44 Customs + handling (Paula was quite upset!) but second and more important, THE WATCH IS NOT RUNNING!! new, out of the box, it winds, its sets, but the seconds hand does not move!!! subjectsmiley14! I think I'm going to return it and try to ask my customs back too! But if the jewelry store want me to pay for my own return costs (€ 25,60/$34.15), this will end up in a big loss... RATS!! I mailed the firm this morning, but haven't heard anything, probably because it's saturday....
