Wittnauer. This watch just crossed my path (7 replies)

I had the intention not to buy any (new) watches this month; I've ordered a new pair of glasses and given the price, it would be wise to skip watch-buying for a month... But somehow, the glasses will not be delivered until next month, so I had some cash to spare!

I came across a not-too-common watch: a Wittnauer Geneve Professional Chronograph. The watch houses a Landeron hand winding movement. The price was right, so the deal was closed.
Today the watch arrived at my house. It's a fairly large watch, just over 41mm. Given the time the watch was put on the market (60s), this was a large watch! Nowadays, it's considered being not too large - although I think that some people wear church clocks on their wrist... (But that's an other subject).

The watch looks great and is in great shape. Even the case back is virtually scratch free. I'm not sure about the strap though. It's a good strap: it's a strap from ATG in GB. Alistair sells first class products (watches and straps), but somehow, I'm considering something else. Perhaps a mesh. So, if you happen to have a suggestion, please, add a reply.

Menno

And here's a pic.

Friday Trivia! How far does your second hand travel? (7 replies)

Most people don't think about radial motion the way that they think about linear motion. After all, a second hand on a watch starts and ends in the exact same place every minute, right? So we usually don't think of the second hand covering any real distance.

But it does!

The second hand makes 1,440 rotations in a day. For perspective, the engine in your car at a slow cruising speed will make that many rotations in a minute. Still, that's a lot of rotations for such a little part!

So your second hand moves in a lot of circles every day. But how far does it actually go?

To figure this out, you have to take into account the length of the second hand. All second hands will cover the same number of degrees of rotation in a day (518,400 degrees!), but the tip of a longer second hand will cover a much larger linear distance. Why is this? Because in one minute, the tip of the second hand will travel the circumference (3.1415, or pi, times double the radius) of a circle with a radius equal to the length of the second hand from the center point of rotation to the tip. The larger the second hand, the greater the circumference, the longer the linear distance traveled.

I'll use a common watch most people can visualize: the Seiko SKX007. The second hand on mine is about 12.5mm from the center of the watch to the tip of the second hand. We'll use these equations to figure out how far it goes:

60 sec/min * 60 min/hr * 24 hr/day = 86,400 sec/day

1/60 rotation/sec * 86,400 sec/day = 1,440 rotations/day

1 rotation = pi*2*radius = pi*2*12.5mm = 78.54mm/rotation

1,440 rotations/day * 78.54mm/rotation = 113,097.335mm/day

So, in other words, the tip of my SKX007's second hand moves about 113.1 meters every day! That's just shy of 400 feet every 24 hours!

That means in a year, the tip of my SKX007's second hand will have traveled about 41.3 kilometers. In the 10 years that the watch can supposedly run between service trips (provided it runs continuously), it would travel an astounding 413 km, or nearly 250 miles!

Not bad for such a tiny little part!

Remember, the shorter the second hand, the less linear distance the tip will travel (though the number of rotations it will have done will be the same). The reverse is true for a longer second hand. If you really want to do some brain gymnastics, imagine this: an infinitesimally small distance away from the center of rotation of my SKX007's second hand, the total linear distance traveled in a day, a week, a month, a year, or a decade all equals zero!

Happy Friday! :D

To be reduced until sold: 1970 Omega f300 "tuning fork" with rare Admiralty on caseback (no replies)

The marketplace is still talking to us and we're listening. Reduced another $20 again today, 11-20-2009. I would be surprised if it lasts much longer.

Money is badly needed so the price on this beautiful watch will be reduced by $10 every other day until it sells or we pull it! This is one of the few remaining pieces from Ray's collection. As you probably already know, Ray is very ill and is liquidating his collection for badly needed cash.

Stunning Omega f300 "tuning fork" chronometer for sale. Has a beautiful silver/white dial that has a sunburst brushed finish and gold and black markers and hands for perfect readability. Case is nice sized at 38mm, yellow gold filled with thick 20 microns of gold and cushion shaped. The case back is stamped with an anchor and the words "The Admiralty", making this watch a relatively rare piece. We believe this Admiralty stamp on the back refers to a British special issue, but have not been able to confirm it.

The watch is in incredible condition and comes on a black genuine lizard strap with gold Omega signed buckle.

It is difficult to rate the condition of a vintage such as this, but aside from minor marks, especially on the back, the watch is in outstanding condition. The watch runs very accurately and should be a great piece to add to any collection.

Condition 90%+/- compared to other vintages
Sale/Trade Price: reduced from $635 to $450 $440 to $430 to $420 to $400 plus shipping
Payment Method(s): Pay Pal
Email Address: johnny.torrez@comcast.net

All offers welcome and will be considered.

Lit fires, 50% off coupons, incoming watches and premature aging... (38 replies)

OK, this is a long one so go potty, get a fresh <s>beer</s> "drink" out the fridge (it's not noon yet) and enjoy the ride.

Mr. Jim of the Jittery clan posted a group picture of some watches about a week or so ago that contained a modded vintage looking sterile sub. Some follow up revealed the build had been documented over on the homage forums. I kept digging and reading up on these "vintagized" subs and pan clones. I had no intention of wanting to build a replica of a known brand, but the process of the build really captured me.

If you jumped in the time machine and went back to my bedroom anywhere between 1981-1987, you would have found me with all sorts of modeling, airbrush, and art supplies working feverishly on stacks of Star Wars toys making them look battle worn and movie correct. The fact that the Millennium Falcon toy came out of the box all white and clean was a big let down for me. I was like, "what type of crap is this?!". Being of the artistic persuasion it didn't stay that way long. I eventually graduated to more refined techniques than the black spray paint can, but continued this hobby well into my college years.

So I had now decided I wanted to take a new watch and make it look old. I considered using my O&W but that seemed like a pretty big gamble being a nice watch that's no longer available, and the fact that I am still new to watch manipulation. I searched e-bay, all the usual cheap on-liners, and had finally decided I would go with an Alpha. I was not completely on board with them because I cant stand their "a" logo on the dial and I am after all doing this for aesthetics. But I figured they were cheap so if I totally botched it, it would not be the end of the world. THEN, I got wind of the Orient coupon deal for 50% off a first timers order. Well, that's me! Plus, I have been wanting an Orient for some time, I just never could decide which one. So armed with my coupon, a bunch of forum "how to" pages bookmarked, and a wild hair...I dropped my $90.

3 days later...boom. Brand new Orient 2ER0001B shows up. Now, before I opened the box I was 100% on this project. I purposely chose a cheap sub, because I have my nice O&W. This would be a nearly identical watch so I though I would have no problems hacking into it and making permanent, possibly damaging, alterations. But after cracking open the box, I must admit there were some serious reservations about what I was planning on doing to this beauty.

No time for weakness Click! What are you made of?!? Get in there!! So I did. Here is my journey in pictures. It should pretty much explain what happened.

New Orient Sub delivered by UPS yesterday @ 3pm:

Bezel and insert popped:

Bezel insert submerged in normal household bleach. Kept an eye on it, removed, dried, and rubbed with chrome polish, put it back in and repeat till desired result.

While the insert was fading, I went about removing the cyclops. Taped it up to be cautious, held the tip of a wood burner to the 1BDI then popped it off with an xacto knife. This was easier than I expected, and just cleaned up the left over adhesive with mild solvent and a q-tip. Blind sub.

I had to wait overnight for the movement to run down, then this morning the movement was removed, hands, and dial followed:

Dial and hands ready to go into a 450 deg oven. Checked every 30 seconds till desired result. Dial took about 15 min. Hands about 20.

MMMM...smells good, what's for dinner? Baked lume!

Cased:

Speaking of case...time to give it some tough love. Put case, nuts, bolts, rivits in a jar, place top on container and shake vigorously. Followed by sanding, polishing, sanding, polishing...you get the idea.

Reassembled, and placed on my oldest nato 10am today. I bleached the insert just a shade more than I wanted, but overall I am super happy with the result. I wanted a clean automatic sub with some patina. Do I have a watch someone is going to confuse with a Rollie that was made before I was born? No. But that was never the intent. I have a new reliable watch that is one of a kind. And technically I have done all the "wearing". Just sped up a bit. I learned a ton about watch assembly, and have a new permanent resident in the watch box!

Before and After:

Hope you enjoyed my franken-watching. OH, and BTW...I am wearing my Monster too!

Its on the big side 46mm but I think I could pull it off on my 7.50 wrist.

Could use some opinions please.
