Strange enough there are only two first class hotels in town: the Taj Mahal and the Oberoi. And there was until last year only one international first class hotel next to the airport: the Leela Kempinski. Now the big chains have moved in: Sheraton, Hyatt etc. just opened new houses near the international airport. Why they are staying out there is as mythical as the obscure city tax: all goods imported into Mumbai are due to a 2% percent import tax.
The Oberoi is the more modern hotel, the Taj Mahal, short the Taj, is overlooking the Gateway to India, one of the major highlights of Mumbai.
